Vinho Verde

IG – Minho and DOC – Vinho Verde
General

Everything is green here! From the vineyards to the dense vegetation and the wine itself, which owes its name not to the color of the drink itself but because, in the old days, the grapes were picked unripe and therefore green.

Nowadays, this is no longer the case and the region owes its name to its dense vegetation and green landscape which covers this area!

Wine Tourism

As the flagship land of the Alvarinho grape, the Vinhos Verdes wine region is beautiful year-round. It is especially attractive during spring, where the colors of the flowered gardens contrast with the green of the vineyards making the landscape ever so memorable!

The Vinho Verde region has a wide range of outdoor and nature activities. Not only can you visit vineyards and have unique wine tastings, but you can also explore the incredible scenery of the Peneda-Gerês Natural Park or venture to try one of the numerous water sports which are offered on the Lima and Minho River.

Cities to visit: Porto, Amarante, Braga, Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima

Main grape varieties

Main White varieties: Alvarinho, Loureiro, Avesso, Trajadura

Main Red varieties:  Vinhão

The wines of this region are characterized by being fresh, high in acidity, dry, and very fruity.

While Vinho Verde is mostly famous for their white wines, the reds must also be tasted. In addition to a high acidity and astringency, Vinhão is a grape variety which has a lot of color and very intense flavor. It's not a wine for everyone, but without a doubt, a tasting you cannot miss and will not forget!

Any of the wines should be tasted with some local food specialties such as piglet and lamprey.
