Formerly known as Ribatejo, this used to be a region known for producing wine in bulk and far less for its quality. Today it is known merely as the Tejo (Tagus), the largest Portuguese river, and famous for its Lusitano horse breed and its wonderful wines!
As for wine tourism, horse riding among the vineyards is one of the best experiences as this is the area of the country with the greatest equestrian tradition. But there’s a lot more… Watching the numerous species of birds that inhabit the Natural Reserve and visiting the rice fields, are some of the activities you can also do in this region!
This part of the Tejo is very different from the one you see next to the city of Lisbon. It is a greener, wilder Tejo where you can live experiences closer to nature, such as boat trips with a stop for a quiet lunch by the river. The Tejo region also has good fish that the local Chefs know how to cook in the best way.
Cities to visit: Santarém, Abrantes and Tomar
Main white varieties: Fernão Pires, Arinto
Main red varieties: Castelão, Aragonês
The landscape is rather flat and marshy and was therefore named Lezíria (The Marsh). Here in the Lezíria, you will find the Portuguese rice fields alongside copious acres of vineyard. The Tejo white wines are very fresh and fragrant, reminding us of the large forest areas found in this region. The reds are dry and full bodied and have strong wild blackberry flavours.
