This is one of the smallest wine regions in the country and almost exclusively dedicated to the production of sparkling wine. Here you will find some of the most well known Portuguese sparkling wine cellars.
The Távora-Varosa region is named after the two rivers that cross it – the Távora River and the Varosa River. It is very associated with the history of the Monks of Cister, a religious order that had great importance in the culture of vines and wine production in Portugal and, specifically in this region, were responsible for planting the first vineyards and for building several Monasteries.
A wine tourism itinerary in this region should include a visit to the sparkling wine cellars, monasteries and some religious heritage monuments or churches. Do not forget to also discover chestnuts which are also very important in this region.
Main white varieties: Bical, Cerceal, Chardonnay, Códega do Larinho
Main red varieties: Tinta Roriz, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Tinta Barroca
Here are born some of the best national sparkling wines essentially white, very aromatic, and fruity. It also produces still wines – white, rosé and red – but with less expression.
