Porto e Douro

IG – Duriense / DOC – Douro and DOC – Porto
General

Douro is the name of the river that runs throughout the region. This is the oldest demarcated and regulated wine region in the world. It was established in 1756 and is, without any doubt, one of the most beautiful places on earth!

Unsurprisingly, its landscape is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Man-made steps along the schist rich banks of the Douro River are what make it such a special region and the home of unmatched & unforgettable wines!

Wine Tourism

If Port wine cellars are a mandatory stop for anyone visiting Porto city, the wine estates in Douro will require a little more time and energy. However, this effort will pay off as soon as you stand on the top of the margins of the river, holding a wine glass and enjoying the very spectacular and unique scenery!

Getting to know the region from the river is also an option, through a boat ride. Another unforgettable experience is to travel through the vineyards of the region by train, which winds its way along the clear water of the Douro River. This region however is incredible and well worth a visit with wine estates dotted all around and incredible hotels and restaurants with magical views.

Cities to visit: Porto, Vila Real, Peso da Régua.

Main grape varieties

Main White varieties: Rabigato, Códega do Larinho

Main Red varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Sousão

The vineyards in the Douro produce two very distinct wines: table wines and the fortified Port wines. Full of history and hard work, the wines in this region date back to about two thousand years ago!

The Douro wines are full bodied, very elegant and have a long after taste. The fortified Port wines are slightly more complex in flavour. From the sweet Ruby to the toasty Tawny and Extra Dry whites, there is an impressive range of wines to explore!
