Covering the slopes of the Serra de Estrela Mountains, the Beira Interior region features a crude and harsh landscape, and its vineyards are planted at high altitudes, where it is frequently cold and windy.
This is a remarkable place that, recently, evolved greatly in terms of its winemaking, which in turn, helped shape its wine tourism. Nowadays, several producers have opened the doors of their families’ manors and refurbished rooms, lounges and gardens, in order to welcome wine lovers and connoisseurs that embark on getting to know this rough wine region.
It is the region of Portugal which has the largest number of “Aldeias Históricas” (historical villages): ancient urban centers which were founded prior to the Portuguese nation and which have a great historical importance. A visit to the Beira Interior region should therefore include a walk through some of these magical villages.
Both in winter, wrapped up in a warm local wool blanket, or in summer, after a dip at one of the many river beaches in Beira Interior, a nice glass of wine from altitude vines, indeed hits the spot!
