Like Port, Madeira and Carcavelos, the Setúbal Peninsula is famous for its fortified wines from the Moscatel grape variety.
This region is proud of being the one to make and bottle the first Portuguese table wine.
The Peninsula of Setúbal is a wine region which has a long winemaking history and very old traditions that are present when you visit any wineries of this area. These are stories which are told and brands that pass from generation to generation.
Since it’s surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, and includes the Tagus and Sado rivers, and the Arrábida hills, the leisure activities on offer are endless and diverse. From a Tagus boat cruise, light trekking in Arrábida, to sunbathing at the beach or spending a morning exploring Setúbal’s market, these are only some of the things you should include in your wine trip.
Foodies will appreciate the local flagship dish – the famous fried cuttlefish - that goes remarkably well with any of the white wines produced in the region.
Cities to visit: Setúbal, Alcácer do Sal, Sines

Here the Moscatel fortified wine is the most emblematic and its unique flavor explains why. This wine has a good balance of acidity, floral aromas, orange peel, honey and butter, acquiring dry fruit aromas depending on the oak aging period. The white wines are very fresh and saline, while the reds have a good acidity and very intense red berry aromas.
