When we think of tourism in Portugal, wine is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Visiting wine cellars, walking through vineyards, meeting producers and taking part in tastings are all part of the collective imagination of those who choose the country as a destination. But Portugal goes far beyond wine. Portuguese olive oil, often referred to as liquid gold, is another major protagonist of the country’s culture and gastronomy. Deeply rooted in history and territory, it can also be experienced through unforgettable sensory experiences, many of which are available on Wine XP.

Oleotourism in Portugal: olive oil experiences

Known as oleotourism, tourism focused on olive oil has been gaining increasing recognition. This comes as no surprise: Portugal is among the world’s leading olive oil producers, with a remarkable diversity of styles, olive varieties and production methods.

Estates and farms welcome visitors, offering the opportunity to explore olive groves, learn about production techniques and, of course, take part in guided olive oil tastings.
Most of Portugal’s olive oil production is concentrated in the Alentejo, a region known for its modern, technologically advanced production. Nevertheless, olive cultivation is spread throughout the country. For this reason, it is very common to find wine producers who also produce their own olive oil, creating experiences that naturally connect the worlds of wine and olive oil.

On Wine XP, you will find several wine producers who are also dedicated to olive oil production, allowing visitors to enjoy complete and complementary experiences.

The Alentejo is undoubtedly the main reference for olive oil production in Portugal. The region concentrates most of the country’s olive groves and combines centuries-old tradition with modern, technologically advanced production methods. It is therefore no surprise that many Alentejo estates have integrated olive oil into their wine tourism experiences, creating proposals that unite wine, olive oil and territory.

At Herdade da Fonte Santa, home to Mainova, olive oil plays a central role in the estate’s identity. Experiences range from guided olive oil tastings to horse-riding tours across the property, offering the chance to observe ancient olive trees and experience, in an authentic way, the deep connection between olive oil and the Alentejo landscape. Learn more about Mainova's olive oil experiences by clicking here.

This appreciation of olive growing is echoed by other leading estates in the region. Herdade do Rocim has 10 hectares of open-field olive groves, while Quinta do Sobroso preserves its own olive trees that are around 100 years old. The historic Herdade do Mouchão owns 34 hectares of olive groves, many of them centuries old, with plantings dating back to 1903.

Outside the Alentejo, oleotourism in Portugal is equally diverse and full of character. In the Algarve, Quinta dos Sentidos, a project launched in 2005, combines wine and olive oil production with a strong commitment to sustainability and respect for the land. In Bairrada, the historic Caves São João has recovered olive trees that are over 50 years old, integrating olive oil into the estate’s identity.

In the Douro, Quinta do Tedo has around 800 olive trees, aged between 50 and 100 years, reinforcing the ancestral link between olive oil and Douro viticulture. In the Tejo region, Quinta da Lagoalva has been producing olive oil since 1875 and is home to one of the oldest olive groves in Portugal, a true testament to the country’s olive oil heritage.

All of these properties are open to visitors and offer experiences that can be booked directly through Wine XP.
