This 900-hectare estate called Herdade do Mouchão, in Portalegre, was bought in 1876 by John Reynolds to supply the cork business started by his grandfather. The family planted several plots of vines and in 1901 built a traditional winery, with thick mud-bricks, whitewashed walls and roofed in Portuguese tiles, that still exists today. John Reynolds is thought to have imported the first Alicante Bouschet vines from France. Located in a premium wine region in Portugal, Mouchão is mostly famous for this red-fleshed grape variety, that creates vibrant red wines. The vineyards cover 38 hectares, and are divided into different plots, the oldest of which are the Alicante Bouschet. Here you will find several wine experiences including visits of the vineyard, of the winery – the oldest in Alentejo -, and several memorable wine tastings.
