Herdade do Mouchão

Alentejo

Herdade do Mouchão does not try to reinvent wine. It preserves it.

The estate was acquired in 1876 by the Reynolds family, of British origin, who still manage it today. It was here that Alicante Bouschet was first planted in Portugal, adapting to the estate’s soils and becoming the foundation of its wines.

The winery, built in 1901, still operates much as it did back then. Grapes are handpicked. Red wines are foot-trodden in stone lagares. Ageing takes place in large wooden vats, some over a century old.

There was a forced interruption after 1974, when the estate was expropriated. It was returned to the family in 1985 in a degraded state, requiring a full recovery. That period remains part of Mouchão’s identity.

What you find here today is not a winery shaped by trends. It is a method that endured.

Visitors notice that quickly. Nothing is staged. What you see is the real process and that is rare.
