Just five minutes from Gouveia, on the slopes of the Estrela Mountains (Serra da Estrela), this is a project created by a couple in love with nature and animals. Quinta Madre de Água has a charming hotel with ten rooms, and a restaurant, where you are welcomed in a family atmosphere and with homemade food.
The project includes a cheese factory, which combines tradition with new technologies in the art of producing the famous Serra da Estrela certified cheese, a sheepfold, and a flock of 500 embroiderer sheep. It also has a stud farm and arena that preserves the purebred Lusitano horse.
Initiated in 2007, this project continues to grow with the acquisition of more neighboring estates – Santo António, Regada, Caramuja Nossa Senhora do Porto – and the restoration and expansion of the century-old cellar, where Madre de Água wines are vinified. In these fertile lands there are also vineyards (with vines which are over 40 years old), olive trees and orchards, with Rocha pear, Golden apple and Bravo Esmolfe, and many rose bushes. In total, the Quinta now has 60 hectares of land, and 16 hectares of vineyards.
Quinta Madre de Água, in addition to cheese and wines, produces jams and olive oil and offers experiences around these gastronomic and wine tourism references. They also have over one hundred dogs on the property that they have rescued, which in addition to the horses and other animals make it a fun visiting experience!
