Quinta do Gradil is one of the oldest properties in Cadaval and is in the Lisbon wine region. It is located by the Serra de Montejunto (Montejunto hills), occupying 200 hectares of agricultural area, of which 80 are vineyards. It is a territory marked by biodiversity and unique landscapes in the heart of Portugal.
The first references to Quinta do Gradil date back to 1492. At that time, it was a wealthy agricultural estate, frequented by royalty for hunting. In the 17th century, wine began to assume a significant economic role, with most of the production being sold to Lisbon. In the 18th century, all the vineyards of Quinta do Gradil were at risk of being uprooted by order of Dom José. The decision was eventually reversed thanks to numerous complaints from the farmers who worked there and the recognized quality of the vineyards after inspection.
Quinta do Gradil has seven centuries of winemaking tradition and history, with prominent figures influencing the success of the estate’s success, one of them being the Marquês de Pombal, who acquired it in 1760. Luís Vieira became the owner of the Quinta in the 1990s and began a new chapter: he modernized the winery, rehabilitated the vineyards, and developed wine tourism. Today, Quinta do Gradil offers wine experiences in Portugal that combine tradition and innovation.
The wines from Quinta do Gradil show the essence of the region's terroir, such as the native varieties, Arinto and Fernão Pires, as well as Viosinho, Alvarinho, Sauvignon Blanc and the red variety Tannat, all well-suited to the region. Just 1 hour away from Lisbon, visitors can book wine experiences ranging from wine tastings to brunches, picnics, and grape harvesting. Guided tours of the winery take place on Saturdays only, for safety and hygiene reasons.
