Quinta do Bomfim, built in 1896, has been owned by the Symington family, British and Portuguese origin, since 1912 and is one of the top Portuguese wine producers.
The family own and run four of the leading port houses, Graham's, Dow's, Warre's, and Cockburn's, as well as a portfolio of Douro wines consisting of Quinta do Vesuvio, Quinta do Ataíde, Altano, and Prats & Symington (a widely acclaimed joint venture that produces Chryseia and Post Scriptum). They have also recently launched, Quinta da Fonte Souto, in the Alto Alentejo sub-region of Portalegre (also on Wine XP).
Located in Pinhão in the heart of the Alto Douro wine region, the Quinta do Bomfim is one of its estates purchased by George Warre for the Dow's brand. Considered one of the finest properties in the region, Quinta do Bomfim is renowned for producing Dow’s legendary Vintage Ports.
The vineyards, planted on schist terraces, have for many years produced the incredible grapes that create memorable Dow’s Vintage Ports. All production, from grape to vinification, is carried out at Quinta do Bomfim. In 1964, the traditional winery was modernized to increase production at a time when labor shortages limited wine production. Later, in 2015, a new and modern winery was built, used exclusively for the production of Dow's superior category Ports. This winery also has a large variety of award winning wines which you can taste in addition to the port wines and they are really worth knowing!
The old wine cellars, dating back to 1896, along with a rare collection of 19th-century photographs and artifacts, are available for tours. Visitors can also explore the vineyard and the traditional lagares (granite treading tanks). Quinta do Bomfim offers a tasting room and an outdoor terrace with stunning views over the Douro and its vineyards, where visitors can taste the Ports and Douro DOC wines.
