Herdade Canal Caveira belongs to the Paiva family, with José Paiva as its founder and Vanda Paz Paiva head of management and winemaking, who was one of the first women to make wine 30 years ago. After having started the Vinícola Castelar company in Anadia to produce sparkling wines and liqueurs, they were looking to move closer to Lisbon. They started by buying an old center which studied grape varieties and turned it into a wine estate with 25 hectares of vineyards, which included 14 grape varieties and vines that were more than 20 years old. The entire property has a total of 45 hectares that include not only the vines but also cork oaks, holm oaks, medronho trees, olive trees, orange trees and pine trees. The new winery was built in 2016, and this was the first year they vinified their first wine. Located in the wine-growing region of the Setúbal Peninsula, at the foot of the Grândola mountain range, it has sandy soils and a climate influenced by the Atlantic coast that favours wines with a fresh and elegant character.
Herdade Canal Caveira has some of its best wines, all certified as Península de Setúbal Regional wines, ageing for at least 12 months inside the Waldemar Mining Gallery at the Lousel Mine. The aim of this ageing period was to study the evolution of the wines in unique and ideal conditions for ageing (low, constant temperature and stable humidity). It is also in these mines that we also find around 1100 bats belonging to 3 species! Incredible! Their other wines are aged in the Canal Caveira cellars or they also have them stored underwater at the nearby coast. Ask about these wines!
Come and visit the Herdade Canal Caveira where you will have a range of tasting options after an interesting visit where you will be introduced to the winemaking process and the history of the estate. The tastings are accompanied by regional products such as cheeses and charcuterie and Alentejo bread.
