Cockburn’s has always challenged "rules" of Port wine. Since 1815, when Scottish brothers Robert and John Cockburn bypassed the busy merchant fair in Porto to buy the best grapes directly from Douro's growers, their approach has been innovative and bold. This pioneering spirit led them to declare Vintage years as they saw fit, regardless of competitors opinions. In 1969, they launched Special Reserve, bridging the gap between rare Vintage years and Ruby Port, using a substantial amount of Touriga Nacional, a grape variety many had abandoned.
To meet market demands, John Henry Smithes the "cowboy of Douro" planted extensive areas of Touriga Nacional in the Douro Superior, making the region the heart of Cockburn’s. In these historic cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, they continue to age their wines in oak casks crafted by some of the last internal coopers in the region. This unorthodox method results in superior Port wines, always guided by founder's principle: "the quality of the wine, this is the first thing to be considered."
They use satellite technology to ensure optimal grape harvest timing and advanced automated methods for gently pressing the grapes at the perfect temperature. This forward thinking focus has earned Cockburn’s B Corporation certification, recognizing its high social and environmental standards.
