Cabrita wines are produced at Quinta da Vinha, located in the Algarve in the Silves area and, as the name implies, are owned by the Cabrita family. The history of this family project begins in 1977 when José André, a local fruit merchant bought Quinta da Vinha and, through the production of traditional Algarvian grapes, made the first homemade wine, already at the time, appreciated for its quality.
The family project evolved and José Cabrita, son of José André, invested in the purchase of 2 more vineyards and the construction of a new and modern wine cellar, a temperature-controlled barrel room and a tasting room for wine tourism events. They actually also produce wines for other wineries now.
The focus of this family project, in addition to combining modernity with tradition in the production of excellent wines, is to value and prioritize Portuguese and indigenous grape varieties from the Algarve. To do so, it invested in grape varieties such as Arinto, Verdelho, Gouveio, Moscatel Galego and Encruzado for the white wines Touriga Nacional, Negra Mole, Trincadeira, Aragonez and Tinta Miúda for the reds.
The vineyards are located 5 km from the Atlantic Ocean and benefit not only from the heat of the Serra da Monchique, but also from the Atlantic breezes and a huge variety of soils, from sandy without irrigation, typical clay-limestone soils of the region and even rocky limestone mineral soil. This combined with the attention and daily care that the owner gives to the vineyards, results in exceptional grapes and then in these truly special wines.
In 2007, the first bottles of rosé and red hit the market, a wine designed for younger, more adventurous customers looking for a local Algarve product.
The last bet of this family business was the creation of a Wine Club to communicate the news of Cabrita wines, exclusive releases, limited editions, discounts, and exclusive benefits for those who belong to this community, which also intends to make known other regional Algarve products and events in the region.
