Less than an hour from Porto, in Baião, lies the charming Quinta da Castanheira, also known as the House of 1000 Curves (1000 Curvas). This unique property is situated in a transitional zone between the Vinho Verde Region and the Douro Demarcated Region, with the magnificent Douro River just 2 km away. This family project is a must-visit for wine lovers exploring the region.
The history of Quinta da Castanheira dates back to 1907, featuring an old winery and winepress that transport us to bygone times. For over a century, the vineyard was cultivated to produce wine for personal consumption and to sell grapes and bulk wine, a typical practice of the time and region. Today, these same facilities welcome visitors for wine tastings in an informal atmosphere that preserves the charm and authenticity of the place.
In 2010, the 1000 Curvas project came to life under the leadership of Armando Soares, father of the current owner, Rodrigo Soares. The reconversion of the 2 hectare vineyard was the first step in transforming the place into a a small boutique winery, a space dedicated to producing high-quality wines with distinct character. Rodrigo, along with his friend and winemaker Pedro Mota, decided to challenge conventions and bring a new approach to the Vinho Verde region.
Currently, Quinta da Castanheira spans about 5 hectares and produces 6 distinct varieties of wines, whites, reds, and rosés, with a highly limited production of no more than 20,000 bottles per year.
Visiting Quinta da Castanheira is an unmissable opportunity for guests to explore the vineyards, learn about the property's history, and enjoy exclusive tastings in a welcoming environment and possibly with the owner himself. It is an invitation to discover the magic and charm of a region that captivates wine and nature lovers alike.
